Dr. Ayeni leads the McMaster Arthroscopy Collective Sports Medicine and Research (MACSports) - a consortium of world class researchers, surgeons, physicians, trainees and more that strive to provide the best care possible to patients.
MacSports Medicine is focused on providing exemplary patient care, innovative research and developing leaders in research and medicine.
Canada Research Chair: Joint Preservation Surgery
As Canada Research Chair in Joint Preservation Surgery, Dr. Olufemi Ayeni is advancing joint preservation care for patients of all ages. He and his research team are developing strategies to prevent joint injuries in children and youth, minimally invasive treatments to curb the development of joint disease in young adults, and new treatments for older patients with cartilage defects and early-onset osteoarthritis. They are also investigating new surgical techniques, adjuvant biologics, the etiology of hip impingement and its impact on the development of osteoarthritis. Their work will lead to better care for patients with hip and knee joint problems.

Dr. Ayeni has published over 400 academic publications in sports medicine as well as several textbooks focused on sports medicine/research.
Dr. Ayeni is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) and the Deputy Chair for the ISAKOS Scientific Committee (2019).
He is the first non-European appointed to the European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy Committee (2020), and is currently the Research and Academy Chair of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (2021).
